The Commodore 64 and Space Invaders

“Space Invaders” was developed by Taito Corporation and was originally released as an arcade game in 1978. The Commodore 64 version was likely developed a few years after the initial arcade release. The gameplay of “Space Invaders” involves controlling a cannon positioned at the bottom of the screen. The objective is to shoot at aliens that move laterally and gradually descend downward. The aliens move increasingly faster as they are eliminated. The Commodore 64 version of “Space Invaders” would have had hardware limitations compared to the original arcade, but would still have sought to faithfully replicate the gaming experience. The Commodore 64’s audio and graphics capabilities were respectable for the time, so the game would likely have offered a good visual and audio experience. “Space Invaders” is one of the most influential games in video game history. It helped define the shooter genre and played a key role in increasing the popularity of video games in general. The image of progressively descending aliens became iconic in the world of arcade games.
