From 1% to 7% CTR: The Reasons Behind a Winning Display Campaign for a Fashion Brand

The world of digital advertising, and particularly the Google Display Network, is a competitive landscape where standing out requires strategy, creativity, and continuous optimization. When a major fashion brand came to us to improve the performance of their display campaign, we knew we had to aim high. And we did. In one year, we managed to grow the CTR (Click-Through Rate) from 1.67% to 7.37%, an extraordinary result considering that industry averages for display banners hover around 0.46%-1.91%, depending on the segment and format. In the image above you can see a screenshot of the same banner delivered in different countries (and the relative differences in terms of CTR)

Here’s how we transformed a decent campaign into a real success story.

The Starting Point: Analysis and Awareness

At the beginning, we focused on analysis. The campaign in question used 300×250 banners, one of the most popular and competitive formats in display advertising. Although the initial CTR was above industry average, we knew there was ample room for improvement.

We identified some critical issues

Generic creativity: the images did not clearly communicate the exclusivity of the brand.
Static targeting: the audience was defined but did not fully leverage Google Ads’ machine learning capabilities.
Lack of dynamic personalization: banners did not vary based on audience segments.

The Winning Strategy in Three Steps

1. Impactful and Focused Creativity

Visual storytelling: we chose images that told aspirational stories, such as a carefully crafted detail from an iconic piece of the brand.
Targeted call-to-action: texts like “Discover the Collection” or “Exclusivity a Click Away” replaced generic CTAs.
Continuous A/B testing: we tested different combinations of colors, fonts, and messages to identify the most performant ones.
Result? The new banners immediately captured attention, increasing viewing time and interactions.

2. Intelligent and Segmented Targeting

Interest-based audiences: we analyzed the online behavior of customers to create targeted audience profiles.
Dynamic remarketing: those who had already visited the site saw personalized banners with the products they had viewed.
Lookalike audiences: using conversion data, we created audiences similar to the most loyal customers.
This strategy allowed us to optimize cost per click and increase the probability of engagement.

3. Continuous Automation and Optimization

Automated bidding strategies: using campaigns with target CPA-based bids, we allowed Google Ads to adapt bids to maximize results, but we always maintained control and oversight.
Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO): we tested various banners with different colors, images, and messages to adapt to context and audience.
With continuous optimization, we refined results week after week.

Conclusion

This case demonstrates that with a combination of impactful creativity, intelligent targeting, and automated optimization, it is possible to achieve extraordinary results even in a competitive sector like fashion.

Our approach was not limited to improving the numbers: we transformed the way the brand interacts with its audience, placing it at the center of the experience. If you’re also looking to revolutionize the performance of your Google Ads campaigns, this is the path to follow.
