Elon Musk and His Wrong Predictions About Starlink

Today we want to talk about Starlink, the main satellite internet connection service. We have seen how this project was born in 2021, even though the first satellites were launched two years earlier. Over time, Starlink has introduced new features and services, including Roam, which allows us to connect anywhere in the world.

However, we must point out that the results achieved so far have not lived up to initial expectations. In 2022, Starlink recorded revenues of 1.4 billion dollars, growing compared to the previous year but well below the 12 billion predicted by Elon Musk in 2015 (source: The Wall Street Journal). This difference is quite evident.

The number of active subscribers grew more slowly than expected, with just over 1 million at the end of 2022, instead of the 20 million predicted in 2015. This could be due to the high cost of the service, which makes it more accessible to people living in cities, where there are lower-priced alternatives.

The economic sustainability of Starlink could be at risk due to limited revenues and the costs of maintaining satellites in orbit. Elon Musk hopes that the Starship rocket can help contain costs, but competition, such as Amazon’s Kuiper project, is becoming increasingly present.

It is clear that there are significant challenges to overcome to ensure its long-term success. It will be interesting to see how SpaceX addresses these challenges and how the satellite connection market will evolve in the coming years.
