22/10/2023It was about time this came out…!!! We’ve been telling our clients for years and years to verify together with us carefully the investments and returns with third-party tools, because trust is good, but….
One day (September 28, 2023) a tweet comes out with an official document https://twitter.com/pdrmnvd/status/1707395736458207430
Essentially, the Google Ads team puts pressure on the “pure” Google Search team to make more clicks on ads. Basically it’s the formalization of what has been known for a very long time: Google’s results are no longer aimed at the best result for the user, but at the best result for the “cash register”. What a surprise…!!!
A lawyer from the United States Department of Justice questioned a Google executive on Wednesday about the techniques that the search and advertising giant uses to allegedly unfairly increase the prices of online advertising.
Testifying in an unprecedented antitrust trial in Washington, in which the United States accuses Google of abusing its dominant position in search and advertising, Google’s Vice President of Product Management, Adam Juda, stated that the company uses a formula, which takes into account the quality of an ad, to decide who wins the auctions used to place advertising on websites.
The Department of Justice accused Google of manipulating online auctions, a multi-billion dollar industry dominated by Google, using these formulas to favor its own profit.
The Department of Justice lawyer, David Dahlquist, asked Juda if he agreed with a document that Google had prepared for the European Union, which stated that the company could “directly influence prices through optimization of our auction mechanisms”. Juda answered no.
Pressed on whether “optimization” could influence prices, Juda stated: “They can.”
Juda said that one of the things that can be “optimized” is an approximate formula that assigns to an ad a long-term value, or LTV, based on the bid presented, the potential click-through rate or how many users will likely click on it and the quality of the ad and the website associated with it.
Google’s advertising division has been criticized by advertisers and website publishers for lack of transparency, with both accusing Google of pocketing too much revenue.
The testimony on advertising represents a shift from previous testimonies that focused on the billions of dollars Google has spent to keep its search engine as the default on smartphones and other devices.
