Tariffs (sometimes) can be a great opportunity. Carpe diem, as someone once said, let’s see what this is about.
India has imposed tariffs on 28 “made in USA” products, including apples, a measure that benefits all Italian (and not only) agricultural producers who have good relations with this great continent. Setting aside the motivations that pushed the Indian government to make this move, one indisputable fact remains: Trump’s tariffs are simply generating an insane chaos that is not manageable by human minds on a planetary level, there are too many variables at play. Never in history has the market been so global and so competitive, so there is no historical data even to train a bit of artificial intelligence.
With this move, the White House removed India from the list of countries considered developing nations, a label that had allowed it in recent years exemption from US tariffs on billions of dollars of exports. According to Trump, New Delhi did not provide the USA with “fair and reasonable access to its markets.” Let’s look at the numbers in play. There are about 2,000 Indian products that had access to the American market without tariffs. In 2018, goods worth 5.7 billion dollars fell under these tariff exemptions. The Indian government thus responded in kind, penalizing a series of American agricultural products, including apples.
Coldiretti in its analysis included in ISTAT data was very clear “Italian apples can benefit from the trade war between the USA and India after national fruit exports to the Asian country exceeded 30 million kilograms for the first time in the first quarter of 2019 with a record increase of 15 times compared to the same period of the previous year”.
So the point now is: how can you export majestic Italian apples to India? The first step to answering this question is simple: first of all, “all” Indians must know about the existence of Italian producers! The only rapid and measurable way is online advertising campaigns based both on search engines (through keywords) and digital graphic banner tools (like virtual leafleting) only for those who visit tricolor websites. An Indian must be able to find (online) easily and quickly an Italian producer. This producer will need to stay in the mind of this Indian user for a sufficient time to get them to complete a request email. It’s not science fiction, it’s possible starting from today. Carpe diem!
