How Much Does Instagram Advertising Cost in 2023?

The cost of Instagram advertising varies based on several factors, including the duration of the advertising campaign, the type of advertisement chosen, and the target audience. Instagram offers various advertising options, including image ads, video ads, carousel ads, story ads, and experience-type ads. Additionally, you can select the type of advertising objective you wish to achieve, such as increasing the number of followers, obtaining clicks to your website, or generating conversions.

Instagram uses an auction system to determine ad prices. You can set a daily budget or a total budget for the campaign and Instagram will try to optimize ad display based on that budget.

Since Instagram advertising prices are subject to fluctuations and can vary considerably based on target audience preferences and advertiser competition, it is not possible to provide a specific figure without further detailed information about the advertising campaign. If you really want to gain more followers, convert them into customers, and see your sales increase, then you need to advertise your posts on Instagram in the right way. To promote your posts on Instagram and find new customers, you need to adopt precise and well-studied strategies. Otherwise, you risk just wasting money. Maybe it has already happened to you when you tried to do it yourself or entrusted someone who wasn’t able to help you properly.

What you need are the right knowledge and strategies to reach everyone who is already ready to shop online. For example: according to the Instagram 2023 Trend Report, a quarter of Gen Z users are more inclined to buy secondhand when an item of clothing is out of budget. Knowing this is not a trivial detail!

The Meta group, which includes Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, is seeking to maintain public attention on the most famous social media platform for images and videos. This has manifested itself through the adoption of Reels to compete with TikTok, adding features such as text-to-speech and voice effects for video narration. Instagram eliminated IGTV and introduced Instagram Video as the only format for videos. Further developments are underway, such as the introduction of Likes in Stories, moderators in live videos, and the ability to delete photos or videos from albums. In 2022, posts on the Instagram feed will return to being displayed in chronological order, with some algorithmically created modifications.

Instagram registers more than 1 billion monthly visitors, which makes advertising on this platform extremely advantageous. Paid ads can reach over 1.2 billion people worldwide. Instagram users are inclined to make purchases from brands they did not previously know, thanks to the visual impact of images and videos that allow them to examine products in depth. Stories offer companies the opportunity to create temporary content that engages users and reduces distances. Instagram sponsorships allow you to reach a wider audience and increase user engagement. With an effective Instagram marketing strategy, it is possible to achieve greater engagement, increase the number of followers, and convert communications into sales.

The cost of Instagram advertising varies based on several factors and does not have a fixed or recommended value. Ads can be on a cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) basis, similar to Facebook ads, and are based on ad auctions. Beyond the auction, the price depends on the target audience, the time of publication, the day of the week, and other factors. Advertisers have control of their budget and can decide how to allocate it, whether by setting a daily budget or a total budget. It is important to manage your budget and communications strategically. In general, it can be said that Instagram advertising can cost from a minimum of €400 per year to budgets of several tens of thousands of euros every year. Strategically, a company should spend between 2% and 5% on online marketing, a portion of which is certainly for social media like Instagram.

Here are five campaign objectives for Instagram advertising:

1. Brand awareness: This objective is useful for making your brand, product, or service known to a wider audience. You can use ads that present your company in an engaging and creative way, focusing on its uniqueness and distinctive value.

2. Traffic generation: The objective here is to drive traffic to your website, allowing people to explore further what you offer. You can create ads that include a direct link to your website or a specific landing page, inviting users to discover more or take a specific action.

3. Engagement and interaction: This objective aims to create meaningful interactions with your audience on Instagram. You can encourage users to like, comment, or share your posts, participate in polls or contests, answer questions, or provide feedback. The goal is to create authentic engagement with your community of followers.

4. Conversions and sales: If you have an e-commerce business, this objective is crucial for you. You can use ads to promote specific products, special offers, or promotions, encouraging users to make a purchase on your website. You can also use features like “Buy Now” to simplify the purchasing process directly on Instagram.

5. Retargeting and loyalty: This objective focuses on users who have already interacted with your business or shown interest in the past. You can use ads to reach this specific audience, offering them personalized content, exclusive promotions, or invitations to participate in events. The goal is to keep the connection alive with existing users and encourage further interactions and purchases.

Remember that each objective requires a suitable advertising strategy and creative and targeted content to achieve the best results. If you’re starting with Instagram sponsorship, you’ll need to select your audience for the first time. If you’re already familiar with Business Manager, you might find it useful to save one or more audiences for reuse in the future.

Here are the elements you can use to select your audience:

1. Locations: You can specify one or more countries, regions, provinces, cities, or postal codes, both included and excluded, to define the geographic areas of interest.

2. Age: You can select an age range you want to target, taking into account the age groups that optimize your budget best.

3. Gender: You can choose between all, men, or women as your target demographic.

4. Languages: You can specify the language, if different from the audience’s location, if relevant to your strategy.

5. Detailed targeting: Here you can add demographic data, specific interests, or behaviors to more precisely define your ideal audience.

6. Connections: You can select people who are connected to your page, an app, or a specific event.

Choosing how much to spend might seem a bit complicated to you. But don’t worry, Facebook gives you guidelines to follow. Here’s the thing: the success of your advertising campaigns is based on trials, trying and refining each aspect of your ads every time. And if once you launch the campaign you notice that the budget is a bit off, you can always pause it or stop it altogether. You can select the budget in two ways:

1. Daily: set an amount to spend per day.
2. Total: set an overall budget for the entire campaign.

After that, you need to plan:

1. Only the start date.
2. A start date and an end date.

To find out the times when you reach more people, you can check the Insights on your Instagram account.

But remember, if you select only the start date, don’t forget to set an end time!

The trickiest part of paid campaigns is ad optimization. You have three options:

1. Post engagement: show ads to the right people to maximize results.
2. Unique daily reach: show ads to people only once per day.
3. Impressions: show ads as many times as possible.

If you’re feeling bold, Facebook also gives you the option to get more responses with a lower-cost strategy. But I suggest you skip it if you’re still new to this field.

To create an ad on Instagram you can use a new post or an existing one. After selecting the Facebook and Instagram pages, you need to choose the ad format. You can opt for a single image, a video, a photo carousel, a slideshow, or a story. But we won’t go too deep into this phase, we’ll examine it in more detail shortly. Now let’s move to the essential phase when promoting posts on Instagram: analysis. You absolutely cannot neglect this.

Monitoring is essential to evaluate the success of your campaign. Using Business Manager, you’ll have access to data on how your sponsorship is performing and can evaluate your target’s engagement, the effectiveness of your graphics, and the best times. If you use the app, log into your profile, select the post, and view Insights. However, it is important to correctly understand the data to draw meaningful conclusions. If you have no experience, work with a professional to make informed decisions and get results without wasting time and money. Now, let’s move to another important topic: Instagram Stories.

Instagram Stories offer a dynamic full-screen experience that is pleasant to users. They can be created with images and stickers or with short videos linked together. Sponsored Stories blend smoothly into other Stories and capture attention thanks to their brevity and temporary nature. They are an excellent tool for reaching new audience segments and guiding the user through your sales funnel. Creating sponsored Stories follows the same process as sponsored posts, with the choice of target, the use of videos and images, and the inclusion of a call to action.

Let’s see how many types of content you can manage with Instagram.

The single image format on Instagram allows you to advertise a single eye-catching photo, in original or square format. You can add text to the image, but it is recommended to limit the overlay for better results. This is the simplest format since it requires only an image. Quality and relevance are essential to capture the user’s attention and encourage them to interact. This format supports any campaign objective you choose.

Video on Instagram is loved by users and is engaging and emotional. You can upload videos to the feed up to 60 seconds and to Stories up to 15 seconds per story. With Instagram Live, you can host live videos up to 60 minutes. Video quality is essential to get results. You need to consider which format best suits your brand, what you want to communicate, and who you’re targeting. Strategic choice is essential to achieve significant results. The video format supports multiple campaign objectives.

The Carousel format on Instagram is fun and allows you to include multiple photos or videos in the same ad. It can appear in both the feed and Stories and includes call-to-action buttons or links to take users to products. Users can scroll horizontally through the content. It’s an ideal format for industries like food, clothing, and travel.

Instagram has introduced sponsored ads in Reels as well, with text and a button to link to e-commerce or a landing page. They work for various campaigns, but only with vertical videos up to 30 seconds. The goal is to promote short and entertaining videos, according to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram. Instagram Stories Ads are very popular ads and you can select them as placement for your photo or video ads. With over 500 million people uploading stories every day, you have the opportunity to place your ad among this dynamic content. They support various objectives such as reach, traffic, app installation, lead generation, and conversions. The most effective ads look like normal Stories, attracting user attention and interest without appearing as obvious advertising.
